There are a variety of applications, particularly in business, architecture, and science, that are not available for the MacOS. Many have said that they could get rid of a Windows PC if they could boot or run Windows on an Intel-based Mac. Others have said that they would much rather keep a separate Windows system. Sep 21, 2007 Screenshot of a Mac OS X desktop with a mounted DMG file’s icon. DMG stands for Disk Image, and is a format commonly used to distribute files and applications among Apple computers. A DMG file is like a virtual DVD or hard drive. They can be “mounted” on your Mac in order to work with their contents, or even burned to an actual physical disc. 5 Ways to Run Windows Software on a Mac Chris Hoffman @chrisbhoffman Updated March 31, 2018, 10:41pm EDT Macs have a thriving ecosystem of software, but some programs still only support Windows. Jan 21, 2020 If you have an iMac Pro or Mac Pro with 128GB of memory (RAM) or more, your startup disk needs at least as much free storage space as your Mac has memory. 2 An external USB flash drive with a storage capacity of 16GB or more, unless you're using a Mac that doesn't need a flash drive to install Windows.
Home > Resources > Make Bootable USB Installer from DMG
(0 comments)
DMG file is a compressed file format being used widely on Mac computer. Windows OS doesn't natively support DMG disk image files, so if you need to create a bootable USB drive from a DMG file, mostly for bootable Mac OS X or macOS installation USB, you need a special utility to help you complete the task.
There is also the possibility of converting the file into a format more suitable for Windows, which is the ISO file format for disk images. Considering the above, let's look at different ways to create a bootable drive from a DMG file on a Windows computer.
Part 1: Convert DMG to ISO and Make Bootable USB from ISO
Since Windows doesn't offer native support for DMG files, you can first convert the file to ISO. Why? A lot of easier to find an app for making a bootable USB from ISO file. The easy way to do this is to use Command Prompt. Don't be intimidated by the non-GUI environment even if you don't have any experience. If you follow the steps below, you can convert any DMG file to ISO and then create a bootable USB using the converted file.
Step 1: Open Command Prompt by typing cmd in the Run windows and hitting Enter.
Step 2: In the command interface, go to the directory in which the DMG file is saved. You can do this by using the 'cd' command followed by the file path, then pressing Enter. For example, if your disk image is in D: and Command Prompt is currently in 'C:', then type 'd:' (no quotes) and press Enter. If it is in a subfolder, type 'cd subfolder', and so on.
Step 3: Use the following command to convert the DMG file to ISO:
hdiutil convert /path/sourceimagefile.dmg -format UDTO -o /path/targetmage.iso
Step 4: Once the ISO file has been created, you can use a burning tool to create the bootable USB drive. To do that, continue with this guide.
Cons:
- File damged or broken after conversion.
- Failed booting from burned USB disk.
- May not work with the latest DMG file.
- Complex and take more time.
Part 2: Create Mac OS X Bootable USB Installer from DMG
Androidphonesoft DMG Editor is a powerful software application for Windows that will allow you to manage the non-native DMG format even if you have no experience. The interface is uncluttered, and you can even use the tool to view files, extract them, edit the DMG and even copy it to a disk. The burn function has one of the highest success rates in the industry, which makes this an ideal utility for our purpose.
Created by the talented team of developers at Androidphonesoft, DMG Editor is currently the most intuitive Windows app for handling Apple's disk image format. Each of its functions have been tested on various Windows versions, with different types of DMG files and on different PC brands. This thorough testing means no wasted DVDs or corrupted files. As long as your DMG file is in good shape, you can directly create a bootable disk.
Step 1 Install DMG Editor
Download and install DMG Editor on your Windows PC.
Step 2 Plug in USB Drive
Launch the application and click on the 'Burn' section. You will also see other modules such as Edit, Extract and Copy.
Step 3 Start Burning ISO File to USB
Now import the DMG file by clicking the 'Load DMG' button, and click on 'Burn'.
In a few moments, your bootable USB flash drive will be ready for use. Since you haven't done any conversion, you can use this directly on a Mac for program installation, which you cannot do with the first method.
Part 3: Create Bootable USB from DMG in Windows Via PowerISO
Another well-known disk image utility is PowerISO. Apart from being ideal for burning ISO files, it can also burn a DMG file to USB to create a bootable drive. There are some settings that you have to keep in mind when burning with this software, but it's easy to get the hang of it once you do it a couple of times.
Step 1: Download PowerISO and install it in your Windows PC. Launch the app and insert a USB drive into a free USB slot in your computer.
Step 2: You can import the DMG file directly by clicking on ‘Burn' in the toolbar or going to Tools >Burn. In the Burn window, select the DMG file from the Source File section.
Step 3:Now review the settings to select the burn speed. The default will be the maximum your hardware can handle, so you can reduce that. You can also choose to finalize the disk and verify it. Finalizing means you can't save any more files on the drive, but it primarily applies to DVDs and CDs. Choosing ‘Verify' will prompt the software to execute an additional process after the burning is done. Any errors in the bootable USB will show up at that point.
Step 4: Now click on 'Burn' and wait for the progress bar to reach 100%. Your bootable USB is now ready.
Cons:
- Expensive for a single license.
- Higher failure rate for bootable device.
- Ugly user interface.
The Bottom Line:
The second two methods are recommended if you don't have much experience working with DMG files, but DMG Editor will appeal to novices and experts alike. The clean interface and minimal user input means a lower chance of errors while creating the bootable media.

Windows On Mac :: Install EXE File From ISO Image?
Apr 7, 2009I have an iso image, which contains a .exe file. The iso image is from a game that runs on windows. Once I run the iso image, wine (version 1.0) starts up, and when I run the exe file, in the process window, I see the exe file for maybe 3 seconds, and then it stops. I don't know if what I am trying to do works. Would I need to install this game some other way and then run* it using wine?

OS X Mavericks :: After Copying File From NTFS To HFS Volume - File Size Changed When Viewing In Windows
Aug 27, 2014I have a Mac Air running Mavericks on a HFS partition and Windows 7 on a BOOTCAMP NTFS partition. I have some files that I want to read/write from/to both systems. Since OS X can't write NTFS and Windows can't write HFS either, and I don't want to use any 3rd-party tools/drivers, in OS X, I copy those files from NTFS to its HFS partition, make changes, then switch to Windows and sync them back to NTFS.
The problem is, after I copied a file from NTFS to HFS in OS X, it seemed ok. But when I switched to Windows, the very copied file in HFS partition had its size changed (bigger) although I didn't make any changes to it in OS X yet. This happens to almost every file I copied, text and binary. For those text files, I tried to open it with EditPlus in Windows and EditPlus reports the correct size on the status bar.

OS X :: Linux/Windows File Transfers - File Names?
Aug 13, 2009I've got to transfer 250GB ish of files from an OSX machine (HFS+) onto a Linux EXT3 machine and a Windows NTFS machine.
The problem is that I've got lots of odd named folders/files on the OSX machine that are not compatible on the linux/windows machines.
For example :
'OLDER THAN 12/08/09' becomes 'ONM6U4~U'
How am I going to get these files over properly keeping the file/foldernames as intact as possible?

Aug 15, 2010I installed Windows with no problem. Now I need to install the drivers, aka the mac disc. There are 2 mac discs I had in my Macbook Pro package. I put in my first one. It was, surprisingly a blank CD. I put in my second one. It did show BOOTCAMP this time, but it only had the options 'Remote Install Mac OS X' and 'DVD or CD sharing'. I couldn't install them. What is wrong with this. I am certain that the package wasn't fake, since I have the Macbook Pro here, but why doesn't the install CDs work?

Windows On Mac :: Install Windows 7 And Can't Get The Boot Camp Assistant To Partition My Drive?
Dec 15, 2009I'm trying to install Windows 7 and can't get the boot camp assistant to partition my drive. The drive in question is 500GB with over 200GB free space. I want a Windows partition of 35-40GB.On first attempt I kept getting the cannot move files error when trying to partition. I read up on the error online, and most people suggested issues with parallels or needing to use idefrag. I had parallels on my machine at one point, but am not sure if there are any problem folders still hiding somewhere. Any tips on that part?I ran idefrag overnight last night. When I booted the machine up this morning, I launched it again to verify that the disk was defraged. Boot camp still doesn't want to play.

Windows On Mac :: MBP I5 17' Clean Install Windows 7 After Formatting Disk
Sep 4, 2010I want to clean install windows 7 after formatting disk. This doesn't sound like a great idea, but I need this for couple of engineering softwares to work. I don't want to spend my nights in computer cluster or at friends pc...
I have heard, I will encounter following issues:
- battery will drain faster
- graphics driver for x64-bit version
- camera
- iPhone backups and syncs (music, video, cal, contacts and apps)
- I would need a external mouse for right click.
I can live with all of the above problems except graphics card drivers. Can anyone provide feedback or useful links they have refered to installing Windows 7?

Windows On Mac :: Unable To Install Windows From .exe / Parallels Asks For A CD Or CD Image?
May 13, 2009I have parallels 4 installed and I want to install windows XP. My school gives us legal copies of windows 98 and a windows xp upgrade. However, neither of these comes in the form of a CD image. They are both .exe files. Parellels asks for a CD or CD image. Is there a way to install windows 98 from an .exe in parallels?
And if so will I be able to use the windows xp upgrade once i have windows 98 installed? I haven't yet tried creating a CD image with the exe file on it. I don't know if this would work because it's all in one file and not a typical windows install disk.

Windows On Mac :: Install Windows 7 On An Internal Disk Via Boot Camp?
Oct 22, 2009Is it possible to install Windows 7 on an internal disk via Boot Camp and then remove this disk and use it as an external drive? I have two drives for my mini, one in use and one in an external case; unfortunately, neither have room for everything plus Windows. If the answer to this question is no, then I'll buy a bigger drive. I'd just like to avoid this if possible (I already have a ton of external drives and not enough ports to plug them into).

Windows On Mac :: Won't Install Windows 7 RC1 / Can't Work With Boot Camp
Apr 26, 2009Why Is Windowsxp.dmg On My Mac Computer
I have been trying to install Windows 7 X86 RC1 on my brand new early 2009 iMac and have been having the same problem every time.
Initial installation goes very smoothly, but all the trouble begins when I load the Boot Camp setup.exe from the Leopard disc.
During Boot Camp installation I get a compatibility warning about some of the Apple Boot Camp drivers working correctly with this version of Windows.
If I go ahead with the installation then what happens is I get a BSOD and then Windows becomes un-bootable. This is repeatable as it happens every single time I do the installation.
Things initially seem to work up until I load boot camp assistant from the Leopard install disc, so I'm wondering if there are other drivers available that play well with Windows 7 for my iMac that I can try? I've followed several Boot Camp tutorials for iMac with Win7 and am pretty sure I am doing everything correctly, but things just aren't working.
